What is a Flare?

A flare is a pyrotechnic that creates a bright light or heat without exploding. Flares are used for distress signaling and illumination. The military uses them and you may see them dropped from aircrafts or fired from rockets. Some flare guns are handheld. Boat or marine flares are a little bit different as far as requirements go.

What is a Marine Flare?

Signal flares burn with a bright red light. Smoke flares are designed to be handheld and placed on the ground. Marine flares are a basically a requirement for every boat that enters water. Water flares can be the difference between being rescued and not being seen at all. Think about it, nobody can see a boat in the water miles and miles off of shore. But if you send up a bright red flare, if someone is in the area, they'll most likely be able to see it. Flares also can deflate life rafts. So for safety reasons you do not want to fire it near your raft. Another good safety tip would be to practice with the flare before you actually have to use it in an emergency. If you do not practice with it, you are not going to know how to use it when the time comes. You want to be confident and have the ability to use the device incase of an emergency.
